First of all, a huge well done to two amazing boys' teams who took part in the regional 5 a side tournament on the 4th March in Balgaddy, Lucan. Playing a combined eight matches all together, Sruleen won seven, playing some amazing football along the way. Unfortunately the one loss did prove costly though, as it meant that one of the teams narrowly failed to qualify for the Dublin finals. Having come through the group stage, the disappointment at the full time whistle of the final showed just how much effort and determination the boys had shown right throughout the day. They should be ever so proud of themselves, as their coaches were in awe of how they performed on the day.
Thankfully, the other boys team qualified without too much difficulty, winning each and every match handsomely. Some beautiful goals were scored, but what stood out most was the team spirit on display. Each and every boy looked out for one another and tried to set up one of their teammates for a goal on every occasion that they could. They now look forward to the finals in a few weeks time where hopefully the boys will experience some more well deserved success. Keep up the high hopes and super attitude boys!
As for our girls, we are very proud of how they all competed and applied themselves during the whole tournament! It was never going to be an easy task as the number of girls we have between Fourth and Sixth just snook up over 80 this year so we had to play in the larger schools section against some schools with much bigger numbers than us.
'Team 1' found themselves in a very difficult group (probably the hardest of all the groups!) but they competed fiercely for all four of their matches. The most striking thing about Team 1 was just how difficult it was to score against us but we had plenty of quality up front too when we needed it as was particularly evident with our 4-0 win in the final group game. They only lost one match out of the four and that was against the eventual finalists, a very strong Scoil Maelruain, who only beat us by one goal!
As for Team 2 (a team consisting entirely of Fourth and Fifth Class girls), our group was admittedly a little less challenging but the girls played beautiful passing football all day long and had to beat a very tough team in Gaelscoil Clondalkin to reach the final. The final itself, (against the dreaded Scoil Maelruain), was a fast paced, high quality, nail-biting affair! Our resilient girls had to come back from behind twice before snatching the victory in the final seconds to send the fans wild!
So on to the Dublin finals go our brilliant boys and girls! No matter what happens from here in the tournament, we are very proud of what all our players achieved last week and we certainly look forward to what the rest of the year has in store for these outstanding Sruleen footballers!
